SPS 2024, Gothenburg, Sweden, November 21-22. From Single Cells to Populations |
During the Swedish Proteomics Society Symposium 2024 held in Gothenburg our team´s postdoctoral researcher Nicole Woldmar presented as a SPECS (Swedish Proteomics Early Career Scientist) award winner. She presented our latest initiative called Individualized Cancer Mapping (ICM), where the aim is to contribute to treatment decision making in late stage cancer patients by looking at the morphological and molecular profile of the tumor samples. |
Our postdoctoral researcher Nicole Woldmar presenting her poster at the HUPO 2024 conference, highlighting our latest project on Individualized Cancer Mapping. Her poster, titled ‘Morphological and molecular profiling as a pilar of precision medicine: tailoring treatment in late-stage cancer patients’ emphasizes how personalized profiling can revolutionize treatment strategies for those in advanced stages of cancer. |
Nicole Woldmar represented the European Cancer Moonshot Lund Center at the International Cancer Proteogenome Consortium (ICPC) meeting, where she presented our latest findings and upcoming projects. The day was filled with impactful discussions and collaborative follow-ups on cutting-edge cancer research efforts from around the globe. |
The European Cancer Moonshot Team attended the HUPO 23rd Human Proteome Organization World Congress held in Dresden/Germany on the 20th–24th of October 2024. |
With 1800 participants this was probably the largest conference in this research area worldwide in 2024. The congress provided a unique opportunity to present and discuss progress in the interdisciplinary field of proteome research from application of new technologies to advancement of biological knowledge, global health and wellness in a variety of workshops, sessions, training courses and 600 poster presentations. First day at the Plenary Hall Jessica Guedes, postdoctoral researcher gave a great talk about the “Integrating Al-based Digital Pathology and Proteome Profiling to Uncover Melanoma Progression and Heterogeneity“, highlighted that integrating Al-based pathology and proteome profiling is a powerful strategy to map melanoma progression, identify new druggable targets for treatment and determine markers of recurrence and progression, which may illuminate new early-stage melanoma prognostic factors and guide a new era of personalized therapy. |

The event contemplated fascinating talks from prestigious researchers worldwide, more than 200 participants, 14 oral presentations from Ph.D. students and first-year postdoc researchers, and over 50 poster presentations. |
During the event, György Marko-Varga, the head of the European Cancer Moonshot team at Lund University, gave a great talk about the history of the Swedish Proteomics Society and also moderated a panel together with Jennifer van Eyk (Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, USA) about challenges in Clinical Proteomics. |
Furthermore, Jeovanis Gil, a researcher at Lund University and a pivotal member of the European Cancer Moonshot Lund Center, gave a fascinating talk about the “Predicting high risk of recurrence in early-stage melanoma,” where he underscored the essential role of proteomics science in advancing precision medicine and explored the most recent publication from the group (Mitochondrial and immune response dysregulation in melanoma recurrence, publish on Clinical and Translational Medicine – https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ctm2.1495). |
On the last day of the event, Leticia Szadai, a medical doctor and Ph.D. student part of the European Cancer Moonshot Team, also presented a brilliant work called “Advancing patient Care: Investigating Prognostic and Predictive Approaches in Melanoma, “where she highlighted the importance of clinical proteomics in patients outcome and treatment, underscoring potential proteins that can be used for predict immunotherapy response. |
Moreover, the new postdoctoral researcher, Jéssica de Siqueira Guedes, received the Poster Award Presentation for the work “The Role of Tumor and Tumor Microenvironment in Early-Stage Primary Melanoma Recurrence: From Proteomics to Histopathology Analysis.” She underscored the role of mitochondrial and immune system dysregulation as a key factor for melanoma recurrence, sharing the results of the recent publication, where she is sharing first authorship with Leticia Szadai (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ctm2.1495). |
Three other posters from the European Cancer Moonshot team were presented at the NPS 2023 event, including two from the postdoctoral researcher Magdalena Kuras, and one from the Ph.D. student Beata Szeitz. |
